Russell asked:
I heard this, but always wondered if it was true and if it is true, what was the point on making this rule. Does this apply to any of the other Mario games like the one for SNES or Super Mario Wii or just one and 3.

No, and it doesn’t apply to any of the games. It’s simply a myth. =)
Hell Naw who told you that
Mario 1 = Super Mario Bros? You can’t get 100 lives on Super Mario Bros. You can only get up to 99.
Actually, no. I have a full detail explanation why.
In Super Mario Bros. 3, you can have a maximum of 100 lives, but that does not mean your game will end. If you collect any more 1-Up mushrooms at the maximum number, you just won’t get any more new lives. But if you lose a life, you will drop to 99 lives, regardless of how many more 1-Ups you collected in a row. But in Super Mario Bros. 1, you can exceed 128 lives, but if you lose a life at that next moment, then yes, your game will automatically end.
The answer to your question about Super Mario Bros. 3 also applies to Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and New Super Mario Bros..
